Down by One

Maya Okafor left Cypress Bay on the last night anyone expected to lose her — the night the high school team blew a championship and lost a coach. Ten years later she’s back to bury a family member and clear out the house, and the only person who can help her is the man who never followed her out of town.

Theo Lin runs the rec league now. He runs the gym. He runs into Maya, the second she sets foot on the court she used to own. The game they used to play has different rules now. The thing between them never had any.
